Ladder and Rescue to Englewood 3rd Alarm

2010-08-28 -

At 1352 hours, Mid-Bergen Mutual Aid requested a Bergenfield Ladder and Rescue to respond to the City of Englewood.  Englewood was battling heavy fire from a large, vacant multiple dwelling located at 13 James Street.

Chief Kneisler responded along with the Bergenfield apparatus.  Ladder 742 was under the command of Capt Lopez and a crew of 4.  They were directed to the rear of the stores off of Palisades Ave. for water tower operations and they were supplied by Leonia Engine 3.  Additionally, they placed ladders on the C side of the building, and worked with members of 746 operating two and a half in the rear.

When the Rescue arrived on scene they were initially set-up as the FAST Unit.  They eventually took on other assignments such as laddering and venting the building and working multiple 2 1/2" lines around the structure.

Bergenfield units worked in Englewood just about 3 1/2 hours.  Thanks to Alex Kneisler and FF Dave Phelan for the pictures.

Bergen Community College to offer Fire Protection UCC classes

2010-08-10 -

Bergen Community College is offering the Fire Protection HHS (High Rise and Hazardous Occupancy) program this fall on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  Persons who already have completed the Fire Protection ICS program may enroll to continue their education and elevate their licensing in Uniform Construction Code enforcement.  The HHS program is 60 hours and covers large area occupancies and construction features such as atriums, malls, underground buildings along with strong emphasis on the storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials.

Persons who have not attended the Fire Protection ICS class are encouraged to consider advancing into the field of Uniform Construction Code enforcement and if enough interest is found the course will also be offered this Fall (September 2010) to run on Monday and Wednesday evenings.  This course is not shown in the catalog but it will still be offered and prospective students can contact the instructor listed below for more information.  Fire Protection ICS (Industrial Commercial Specialist) is a 120 hour program based on the enforcement of the NJ Uniform Construction Code relating to fire protection systems and building construction.  This is the first step in the licensing process that will allow you to enforce the construction code in a municipal agency.

The fall semester continuing education catalog is available on the Bergen Community Website or by clicking the link below to download it as a PDF.  The Construction Code – Fire Protection classes start on page 70 of the catalog.

Budd Lake Firefighters Do Their Yearly Car Fire Training

2010-08-26 - Tuesday night August 24th firefighters trained on fighting car fires using real life props by filling cares with hay and rotating crews as they sharpen their firefighting skills on fighting car fires. The first car was donated to the department for the drill the second truck was the fire departments old chiefs car a 1998 Chevy Tahoe that was retired earlier this year. It was strange seeing a truck that saw a lot of fire in it time blazing away but the training was great and the department is better prepared.

KNIGHTS OF FIRE ESCORTS WTC STEEL TO THE PENTAGON

2010-08-28 - On Saturday August 28, 2010, members of the Knights of Fire New Jersey Motorcycle Club, in support of the Fire Department New York-Fire Family Transport Foundation, The Wounder Warrior Project, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the Iron and Steel Team - led a procession to escort a piece of WTC steel from New York to the Pentagon in Arlington VA. One of the team leaders of the Knights is Steve Sansevere, a neighbor of Ex-Chief Angelo DeCarlo, who was accompanied by Exempt New Milford firefighter Ron Berndt. Together Steve, Ronnie and several others organized the run, which safely delivered the steel to be erected as part of a 9/11 memorial on the Pentagon grounds. Ex-Chief DeCarlo travelled to the Molly Pitcher Rest Area on the NJ Turnpike, one of the many stops between Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn and the final location in Arlington. Angelo took the opportunity to film the arrival of the steel, and capture images of several hundred of the motorcycle riders who made that day a success. The fire service prides itself on keeping history alive, through anniversary celebrations, written and verbal accounts, parades and many other methods. Although nearly 9 years have passed since that fateful day, Saturday's event was an example of the brotherhood firefighters (active, exempt or retired) have in keeping the torch of history in our daily thoughts. God bless the families of those who perished on that tragic September day in America's history. Keep their spirits alive by supporting future events such as the one this past Saturday. God bless America
